Angry Chicken Has A Secret 👀
While doing chores, we stumbled across this broody little lady hiding outside of the netted area. Enduring rain and all to protect those eggs.
Making Time for Your Family: Family First
There’s a lesson I’ve learned in the past seven years of being a farmer, and I want to share that with you. A lesson about the priorities we set, the choices we make, and the time we spend – especially when it comes to our families.
Seven years on our beautiful farm situated on the James River. Sounds idyllic, right? But I’m going to be brutally honest with you. In all this time, I’ve never once been in that river. Yep, you heard that right. We’ve been fishing maybe … 3 times, but never in the river since we moved to the farm and I haven’t taken a moment to truly enjoy it.
Why am I sharing this? It’s not to complain how busy we are, but rather to underline a common mistake many of us make – prioritizing our work, our dreams, our ambitions, over the fleeting moments that really matter. Moments with our family.
When you’re deep into building something, whether it’s a farm, a homestead, or any venture, there’s a trap we all tend to fall into. The “I’ll make time later” trap. The “just one more task” trap. And before you know it, the years fly by, and you realize you’ve missed out on countless opportunities to create memories with your loved ones.
I’ve got three kids who are growing up so fast. And here’s my biggest fear: that their childhood memories are filled with, “Dad’s too busy on the farm again.”
We’ve decided to make a change, being that a least once a week, we do something fun together. Last week, we finally tubed the James. This week, cook-out at the barn. I want to ensure that when my kids look back, they remember these fun, spontaneous moments. Moments where work took a backseat, and family joy rode shotgun.
It’s a hard balance, I know. There’s always something to be done here on the farm like fencing, mowing, tending to the animals – the list is endless. I’m sure you’ve had or have these same periods in your life. And yes, we do it with the best intentions. We want a better future for our families, a more prosperous farm, a brighter tomorrow. But let’s not forget about today. Today is just as precious.
So here’s my advice to you: don’t wait. Don’t put off those small moments for a ‘better time.’ That better time is now. Don’t make the same mistake I did. Family first, always.
Thanks for taking the time to read my thoughts. We’re off to make some more memories. And hey, don’t forget to make some of your own!
Erm, Where’s the Beef?
The Wait is Almost Over!
We have a big restock coming over the next 2 weeks. Chickens are at the processor and we’ll have whole birds as well as parted cuts available. Cattle are also at the processor, and expect to be restocked next week after dry-aging is completed. So hang in there another week or two and thanks for your patience!
