FDA Approves Lab-Grown Chicken

science lab

At Longbottom Farm, we believe in providing you and your families with the highest quality grass-fed beef, woodland pork, pastured poultry, and eggs. As a local family farm, we take great pride in the care and attention we put into raising our animals and cultivating our land. Today, we want to shed some light on an important topic that affects both our farm and your food choices.

We recently came across an eye-opening article published by CBS News, titled “Lab-Grown Meat Approved by FDA: Cultivated Chicken Hits the Market“. This piece highlights the FDA’s recent approval of the first two companies to sell lab-grown chicken. While this may seem like a novel development, we believe it’s crucial to emphasize the importance of supporting local farms for a multitude of reasons.

Now, we don’t want to yuck your yum, but we do want to remind you that when you choose meat and eggs from Longbottom Farm, you can enjoy your meal without imagining scientists in lab coats brewing up chicken in beakers!  Here are a few reasons to stick with traditional farming and local products:

We’re a Farm, Not a Lab: We prefer our animals to roam freely in green pastures rather than inside Petri dishes. At Longbottom Farm, we believe that farm-to-fork should involve real farms, not a mad scientist’s laboratory.

Tastes Better Without the Test Tubes: Our secret ingredient is fresh air, sunshine, and a dash of good old-fashioned TLC. We can’t help but think that lab-grown meat might be missing that special “farm-fresh” flavor.

You Won’t Find Beakers in Our Kitchen: When you cook our locally raised beef, pork, and chicken, your kitchen will be filled with the delicious aromas of natural, pasture-raised goodness. With lab-grown meat, you might end up with a whiff of sterile lab equipment. Not quite the same appetizing experience!

The Mystery of the Cultured Cocktail: Lab-grown meat is cultivated in a laboratory setting, where cells are grown in a nutrient-rich medium, then grown out in a bioreactor.  It might sound more like a science experiment than a meal. At Longbottom Farm, we prefer our animals to be nourished by the sun, soil, and nutritious pastures, resulting in a more authentic and flavorful product.

Frankenfood or Farm Fresh: While lab-grown meat is often touted as a solution to various environmental and ethical concerns, it’s hard to shake off the feeling of it being more like a science fiction creation. On the other hand, our farm-fresh products are rooted in age-old farming practices, ensuring a genuine and wholesome experience with every bite.

Combating Climate Change: Our regenerative farm actively combats climate change by implementing practices that promote carbon sequestration, biodiversity, and soil health. Through rotational grazing, holistic land management, and appropriate herd sizes, we help mitigate greenhouse gas emissions while fostering a resilient ecosystem. Lab-grown chicken and bioreactors, on the other hand, may rely on energy-intensive processes that contribute to carbon emissions and lack the natural climate solutions found in regenerative farming.  While lab-grown meat companies often claim to be more sustainable than concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) and feedlots, it’s important to note that their comparisons overlook the regenerative farming practices employed by farms like ours.

We understand that these facts can be unsettling, and we want to assure you that our farm is committed to providing you with food that you can trust, sourced from animals raised with care, compassion, and respect for nature (and not from laboratories!).

We want to express our gratitude for your continued support of our small family farm. Your decision to buy from local farmers is more than just a purchase; it is a vote for sustainable agriculture and the well-being of our community. Together, we can create a future where small family farms thrive and nourish our bodies and our planet.
