Our Freezer Was a Mess (Yours Might Be Too)

We finally did it. Cleaned out the freezer in our kitchen.
I feel we do this every few years, but I also can’t remember the last time it was done. Usually when we’re down to one bag of frozen peas, some mystery packages, and a lot of regret.
This time, we found stew birds we processed for ourselves back in 2019, and a few roasts with ruptured seals—stuff that didn’t quite make the cut for sale and ended up in our family stash.
At this point, I couldn’t even tell you how long some of it had been in there.
So that led me down a rabbit hole—how could we avoid this next time? I did a little research and here’s what we came up with. A few simple things to help keep the freezer more useful and less of a meat mystery zone:
🧊 1. Write the Date on the Package
Even if it’s labeled, jot down the month and year (with a Sharpie). That way, you’re not trying to guess how long it’s been in there. We don’t sell meat more than a year old, but we’ve eaten plenty of roast at 2-3 years that were just as amazing as if we’d just processed it, and dates will help with this.
🧊 2. Use Bins or Totes
We’ve got one for beef, one for pork, one for chicken, and one for turkey. Keeps it easy to grab what you need without pulling everything out. Also allows us to monitor what we’re running low on.
🧊 3. Keep a “Need to Use” Basket
Toss the older or random stuff in one spot. It’s your go-to for meals when you’re trying to make space or avoid waste. This will really help with those items that end up forgotten in the back of the freezer somewhere.
🧊 4. Cook Extra on Purpose
Thawing a pork shoulder roast for pulled pork? Consider thawing two and freeze some cooked leftovers. Makes weeknights easier or those days when you need something quick. Don’t forget to label (Step 1) and put in the right bin (Step 2)!
🧊 5. Plan a Freezer Meal Night Once a Week
Pull something random and roll with it. It keeps the freezer from getting backed up and stretches the grocery budget too. The same device you’re reading this with can double as your personal recipe chef. Just google the cut and take your pick at the endless options presented.
These are just a few things we’re doing to keep our own kitchen freezer under control. Thought you might find it helpful too—especially if you’ve got a mix of roasts, chops, and ground beef stocked up from us.
Need to restock? We’ve got plenty of pasture-raised meats ready to go.
Thanks for following along and supporting our family farm. We’re grateful to be part of your meals!
Thanks for following us and allowing us to serve you. If you have questions, give us a shout! Have a wonderful week!
