Someone gets really excited for breakfast!

Hey Reader
Hope you’re having a great week! I wanted to share something that I was reminded of on a recent trip to the grocery store, and it’s those sneaky meat and egg labels.
Some of them sound really good, but don’t mean what you think they mean.
Label #1: “Made in USA” (Not What You’d Expect!)
When you see “Made in USA” on meat, you might think that animal was born, raised, and processed right here in America.
But here’s the catch: an animal can be born and raised anywhere in the world, then shipped to the US for just the final processing step, and still legally carry that “Made in USA” label.
Think of it like this – if someone bakes a cake in China, ships it to America, and puts frosting on it here, they can call it “Made in USA.”
That’s essentially what’s happening with a lot of meat in your grocery store. The cow could have spent its entire life grazing in Australia, get processed in a US facility, and boom – “Made in USA” label.
Label #2: “Pasture Raised” (The Bare Minimum)
This one really gets me fired up. The USDA definition of “pasture raised” is incredibly loose.
Animals just need “access to pasture” – which could mean a tiny door that leads to a small dirt lot that they may or may not ever use. There’s no requirement for how much time they spend outside, how much grass they eat, or how big that “pasture” needs to be.
It’s like saying a house has “access to fresh air” because there’s one small window that could theoretically be opened. Technically true, but not the picture most people have in their minds when they hear “pasture raised.”
The Longbottom Farm Difference
Here’s what you get when you buy from us: Our animals are raised right here in Virginia, live their entire lives on our actual pastures (not dirt lots with fancy names), and are processed at local facilities we know and trust.
When we say grass-fed beef, those cattle spend their days doing what cattle are meant to do – grazing on real grass in wide open spaces.
When we say woodland pork, our pigs are out there rooting around in the dirt and shade, living like pigs should live.
No misleading labels, no fine print, no corporate loopholes. Just honest farming the way it should be done.
Thanks again for supporting small farms and keeping it local!
P.S. Got questions about how we raise our animals? Hit reply – I love talking about what we do here on the farm!
Thanks for following us and allowing us to serve you. If you have questions, give us a shout! Have a wonderful week!

With our appreciation,
Jason, Lexi, & Family
