‘Round the Farm

Hey Reader,
You might’ve noticed it’s been a few weeks since you heard from me. Between the snowstorm, ice, and farm chaos, writing took a backseat to just keeping things running. But I wanted to fill you in on what’s been happening.
We thought we had our winter systems pretty well sorted out, until the tractor quit working right when we needed it most. Turns out, one piece of equipment breaking knocks out about four or five other systems we depend on.
No tractor means we’re manually moving hay bales (not fun), can’t clear the driveways or paths, and it’s a back-up generator (thankfully we haven’t needed that).
Then there’s the water situation. We’ve got automatic waterers for the cattle which are still working fine (fingers crossed). The ones for the horses in the barn and outside are different story.
Waterlines in the barn froze solid, so we’ve been hauling 5-gallon buckets of water every day to the horses (both in and outside the barn), as well as chickens. Farm cross-fit is what I’m calling it (Trademark!).
Pretty much anywhere that needs it. It’s a daily routine now, and let me tell you, those buckets get heavy real quick.
It’s pretty much as it sounds—a lot more work than planned.
Don’t get me wrong, things could be a lot worse. We’ve been fortunate to keep power, the house water has been fine, and we’re looking forward to some milder temps this week.
But here’s the thing—when all that ice starts melting during the day and re-freezing at night, it will likely create some sketchy conditions. Be careful out there.
Here’s where we stand: Right now, the farm is closed for pickups / deliveries until we can get the roads and driveway clear and things clear out a bit. The path to the barn is a solid sheet of ice, and safety comes first—for you and for us.
We’re hoping to get the tractor fixed this week and opened back up by the end of the week, and I’ll send another update once I know for sure.
Thanks for your patience while we dig out (literally). If you’ve got an order waiting or questions about pickup, just reply to this email and I’ll get back to you.
More to come once things thaw out a bit.
Stay warm!
Jason
