Farm Updates

As spring transitions into summer, so begin more projects and adventures.  While we remain out of stock on our retail cuts (that will be fixed early August), our first round of beef shares are being processed and second round soon to follow.  Here’s what else is happening and in the works.

Baby Chick

New Chicks Have Arrived!

Eggs have been selling out as fast as we get them.   To fix that, we now have 100 new layers on the farm.  Some baby chicks and some pullets (teenage birds).  They are not laying yet but will be soon.  In the meantime, we’re rotating them around to fertilize the pastures and fill up on all the bugs and grass they want.

Resting Cows

August Beef Restock

Beef will be fully restocked mid August! Between July and August, we are taking in ~ 4000 lbs of cattle that should yield ~ 1600 lbs of beef. To ensure we have plenty of stock, we’ll be suspending bulk shares (Quarters, Halves, and Wholes) for this fall. Those shares will be converted to individual cuts / value packs. This way, we can share more beef with more people and have more of your favorite cuts in stock. Shares will be available again once processor back log settles a bit.

Farmers Market

On Farm Pick-Up

While our stock is low and the pandemic persist, we are still available for on-farm pick up of eggs, beef, and pork.  We are practicing social distancing and following guidelines but remain open for business.  We can place your order outside for pick-up if you desire no contact, or load it up for you while maintaining the recommended distancing.  Pasture to Porch (Fed Ex), Farmers Market, and local delivey are all on hold for now but will return later this summer once inventory is restored.

That’s it for now. While this pandemic has temporarily emptied our freezers, it has given us a chance to set in motion some future projects and offerings we’re really excited about (more to come). Thanks for your patience during these strange times and stay tuned for more!

Thanks for following us and allowing us to serve you!  If you have questions or would like to share your thoughts, give us a shout!

Where’s the Beef … and Pork??

empty

First Off, Apologies

for the writing hiatus and absence of more frequent updates.  It’s been crazy busy around the farm.  Spring is always a time when growing, making, marketing, and more growing all converge.  Couple that with some new projects we’re working on and you have … organized chaos.

On To The Bad News.

As you’ve probably seen, our meat offerings have been sold out for the most part.  As soon as we get any beef in and on the website, it’s gone.  We are working hard to remedy that but at present, we are looking at Mid August before we’ll be fully restocked in beef.

The bottleneck right now is with processors / butchers.  They are working tirelessly, but are not equipped to deal with the influx of animals they are seeing.  Talks of food shortages and broken supply changes have led to unseen demand, specifically in locally produced food.  That demand has led us farmers processing way more animals than usual and this has created the bottleneck at the processors.

We have dates in July, August, and September for beef and pork.  We are also still actively calling butchers within a 4 hour radius to get animals in faster but no luck for our retail side of things thus far (you need special packaging and labeling for individual cuts).

Now The Good News!

We have obtained dates this month and next to take a number of cattle in.  Thompsons Meat Processing was able to get us in and we couldn’t be more grateful.  It’s the first time we’ve used them but they’re veterans when it comes to meat processing and have great reviews.  We’re looking forward to working with them and providing you with the grass-fed / grass-finished beef experience you’ve come to expect.

While this is great news, it does come with a caveat.  They are Virginia inspected and don’t label individual cuts with weight.  This means we can’t legally sell by the cut as they are required by law to have the  weight listed and obtained by a certified scale.  Our processor does offer share processing (quarters, halfs, and wholes).  They provide the hanging weight, dry aging, and vacuum packaging which are exactly how we do our current shares.

To the point, we’ll be offering a number of quarter shares this month and next.  These shares are 4.99 lb based on the hanging weight we get from the butcher.  Steaks will be 1 inch thick (NY Strip, Ribeyes, Filet Mignon, and Sirloin), Roasts 2-3 lbs (Chuck, Arm, Round, Brisket), and ground beef in 1 lb packs.  Really not much difference from what you’ve come to expect.  8 of these are available on a first come, first serve basis.  If this is something you’re interested in

Here’s What You Do

  1. Just click the link below to reserve yours now with your deposit
  2. Once your share is ready (Late June), we’ll send you an invoice right to your email inbox where the remaining balance can be paid.
  3. Then just decide on farm pick-up (free) or delivery ($0.99 / mile from farm).

We anticipate these will go fast.  We take them in mid June and should be ready by late June / Early July based on dry aging time.

These will also be on the website but not until days after this email, so as to give you first dibs on this.  Thanks for following us, being patient during these crazy times, and supporting local.  Let us know if you have questions.

Charlottesville City Market To-Go

So we are at the Charlottesville City Market this year.  While most farmers markets are closed, Charlottesville City Market has come up with a great way to get locally-produced food to those in our area.  It’s a drive-thru called City Market T0-G0.  All you have do is pre-order online via the City Market T0-G0 website.  Choose your Saturday time slot.  Then drive through and pick up your order.  You can order from multiple vendors which means a great selection of many locally produced products (meat, eggs, honey, baked goods, coffee, etc.

You pull up, drive around a large horseshoe and stop at your vendors to pick up your products.  You keep your trunk open and the vendor will put your product in the trunk, no need to get out of the car.  When you exit, your trunk and area is wiped down & sanitized, then you’re on your way with a variety of locally-produced food.

Just go to Charlottesville City Market To-Go and check it out.  Thanks to all of you who have come out and supported us and other local neighbors during this time.

Farm Updates

So you’ve probably noticed a lot of little blue sold out signs on our website.  The demand for locally raised food has skyrocketed so we’re working hard increase inventory and make sure we have what you need.

1. Our beef should be fully restocked next week!

2. We have brought some extra pigs on farm to try and make up our pork shortfall. Unfortunately, we’re still a couple months out on those being ready but increasing inventory in an effort to ensure items are in stock.

3. Eggs are flying out the door faster than ever but we’re looking into increasing our flock size to keep up with that demand.

4. Pastured poultry is something we’ve been wanting to add as a new product, but have had trouble sourcing chicks due to the demand the hatcheries are seeing.  At this point it’s a matter of when, not if and keep you updated as this progresses.

So that’s what’s going on around the farm right now. Thanks to all of you for your support and for choosing locally-produced food for you and your family.  It’s been really great seeing communities come together and support one another. Hopefully after this pandemic is over, spending more time with those we love and turning to our neighbors when in need become a part of the new post-pandemic norm.
