Spring is here, which means it’s time to start raising pasture-raised chicken again. And this year, we’re kicking things off a little differently.

Instead of ordering from one of the big hatcheries and picking up a peeping box at the post office, we decided to order from a small, husband-and-wife farm out of South Carolina — Stumphouse Farms.

This past week, we brought home 300 Cornish Cross chicks. We met them in Farmville which is a change from how we usually do it (pick-up at the post office), and brought them straight from Stumphouse Farms back to our farm.

It might seem like a small change, but it matters. Mail-order chicks usually do fine, but it’s still a stressful trip that can sometimes take a couple days.

And if there’s a delay, it can turn into a rough start for the birds.

Picking them up in person meant less stress, a smoother transition, supporting another small farm, and healthy, active chicks right out of the box.

They’re now in the brooder for the next three weeks, staying warm and dry until they feather out. The brooder is a small building that offers heat, food / water, and safety until they’re a little bigger.

After that, it’s out to pasture — rotated daily on fresh grass, eating bugs, soaking up sunshine, and living like chickens should.

All Cornish Cross chickens grow fast, but how they’re raised makes a big difference — especially for you.

Here’s why that matters:

  • Better nutrition, better flavor. Pasture-raised birds get sunshine, exercise, and a natural diet, and that shows up on your plate. This has been shown to result in higher in omega-3s, vitamins like E and A, and have a richer, more complex flavor.
  • Real texture. Grocery store chicken can be soft or watery. Our birds move and forage, which builds real muscle — so the meat holds together better, cooks cleaner, and actually tastes like chicken (pun intended).
  • Peace of mind. You know where your food came from, how it was raised, and that it was done the right way. No mystery ingredients, no crowded barns, just honest food from a farm you know.

Our first batch will be ready in late June, and with us not doing the farmers market this year, we’re expecting to have a lot more in stock on the website. We’ll also be raising additional batches through the summer and fall, so there should be plenty to go around.

Visit our online farm store for more pasture-raised goodness and thanks for following along and supporting our farm.
